The recent U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Oral Health refers to a silent epidemic of dental and oral disease, and calls for a national effort to improve this problem. "80% of dental decay lies in 20% of the children, with lower income families most affected." (LA Times, 1-07-01)
The Los Angeles Unified School District reports the number one defect that school nurses find in children are dental defects.
A UCLA Dental School research report points out that an increasing number of immigrant and working poor families have few economic resources and are unlikely to have health insurance or Medicaid coverage.
Although provided with free space within the Burbank Community YMCA building, the Kids' Community Dental Clinic of Burbank is a separately managed, independent nonprofit program. It provides high-quality, low-cost dental treatment and preventive care to children of low-income working families within the Burbank Community and the surrounding areas. All of the professional dentists and dental hygienists volunteer their time. The staff office manager is Louanna Fonnegra.
