Swimming Lessons

The Burbank Y offers swim lessons for all ages so that everyone can safely enjoy the pleasures of an aquatic environment. Swimming is a life skill, as well as great exercise and a challenging sport. Each year we teach thousands of children to swim, which is why the Y has long been the most trusted organization to provide swim lessons.

General Information

Classes are open to non-members, though Y members receive dramatically reduced rates and priority registration.

Class Length: For your convenience our classes run month-to-month. Group swim lessons are 45 minutes long once a week. All other classes (Privates, Parent-Tot and Adult Lessons) are once a week for 30 minutes.

Swim Test: If you are new to our program and your child has had swim instruction in the past please fill out a Swim Test Request Form at Member Services.

Parent / Child Swimming – Age 6mo–3yrs

Parent-Tot I – Shrimp & Kipper

Ages: 6- 30 months w/ adult

Max: 10 pairs of 1 parent & 1 child

For our littlest swimmers, this class is designed for beginners and toddlers up to 24 months. Children will be taught comfort in a swimming pool with a focus on developing basic swimming skills such as floating, kicking, paddling, blowing bubbles, and breath control. The children will also learn how to interact with an instructor and become accustomed to a swim lesson environment. Participants are required to wear tight fitting plastic pants or swim diapers while in the pool. An adult must accompany their child in the pool.

Parent-Tot II – Inia & Perch

Ages: 21- 36 months w/ adult

Max: 10 pairs of 1 parent & 1 child

The Parent-Tot II class is designed for toddlers with prior swim lesson experience who are ready for the next step in their progression. The children will begin to focus on grasping swimming techniques. The participants will begin to focus on skill retention and having the ability to perform skills on their own. Children will learn paddling, kicking, breath control, jumping, and eventually independent floating and swimming. This is a fun class that will help prepare your child for future swim classes! Participants are required to wear tight fitting plastic pants or swim diapers while in the pool. An adult must accompany their child in the pool.

Preschool Swimming - Age 3-5

Tiny Tots (TTS)

Ages: 3-5 years

Max: 5 participants

This class is designed for the preschool beginner who has had no real experience in the water. Children participate without parents and work on floating on front and back, kicking on front and back, bubbles, putting face in the water, basic paddle stroke, pool safety, water adjustment and water confidence. Patient instructors work to create a positive experience for these little swimmers. There are no prerequisites for enrollment, other than age.

Tiny Tots Plus (TTSP)

Ages: 3-5 years

Max: 5 participants

Tiny Tots Plus is for the intermediate preschooler who can already swim 15 feet unassisted using a paddle stroke on their front, side, and back. Participants work on rotary breathing, backstroke development with proper technique, and elementary backstroke. There is also continued work on treading water, deep water swimming, basic diving, floating, endurance, and pool safety.

Youth Swimming – Age 6-12

Polliwog (PW)

Ages: 6-12 years

Max: 6 participants

Designed for the school-age beginner who has little or no experience. Emphasis is placed on water adjustment, kicking on front and back, basic paddle stroke, floating on front and back, basic backstroke, and pool safety. There are no prerequisites for enrollment other than age requirement.

Guppy (GUP)

Ages: 6-12 years

Max: 7 participants

This level is for school-age advanced beginner that can swim 1 length of the lap pool (20 yards) on their own but need to work on their stroke technique. Alternating side (rhythmic) breathing and sidestroke will be introduced, as well as a more advanced technique for backstroke and elementary backstroke. Participants will work on floating on front and back, treading water, deep water swimming, pool safety, and introduction to diving.

Minnow (MIN)

Ages: 6-12 years

Max: 7 participants

Minnow is for students who can already swim 1 length of the lap pool (20 yards) with freestyle, backstroke, and elementary backstroke. Students will work on building endurance. Proper rotary breathing technique will be continued to be stressed, and participants will be introduced to breaststroke in addition to refining all the strokes.

Fish (FIS)

Ages: 6-12 years

Max: 7 participants

For participants who can already swim 2 length of the lap pool (40 yards) with freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke. Students will continue to work on their stroke technique and endurance while being introduced to butterfly.

Fly Fish (FLY)

Ages: 6-12 years

Max: 7 participants

Flying Fish is for students who can already swim 80 yards of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Students will focus on technique and endurance for freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Continued work on elementary backstroke, butterfly, pool safety, treading water, deep water swimming, and diving.

Shark/Porpoise (SHA/POR)

Ages: 6-12 years

Max: 8 participants

This class is for the advanced swimmer who can swim 100 yards freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and 80 yards butterfly. There will be a strong emphasis on technique and endurance for I.M. strokes. The class will include improvement on competitive starts, turns, plus expansion on rescue skills, and aquatic emergencies. Shark/Porpoise is designed as a swim team conditioning class.

Adult Swimming Lessons

Adult Beginner (AB)

Ages: 13 years+

Max: 8 participants

This class is designed for the adult beginner who may be timid about swimming or who has never swam in deep water. Class is self-paced and will work on basics such as floating, treading water, kicking, and basic paddle stroke. Instructors will help you work toward your own personal goal and will guide you in the areas in which you want to improve.

Current Schedule

Adult Intermediate/Advanced

Ages: 13 years+

Max: 8 participants

This class is designed for adults who can swim at least 25 feet (about 1/3 of the length of the lap pool) on their own but would like to work on stroke technique. Focus is on the basics of freestyle and breaststroke. Swimmers will continue to work on endurance, confidence, and treading water. Ideal for those that are not afraid of the water and can swim but have never had any formal training. Or For adults who can already swim 40 yards (1 lap) on their own. Focus on the development of strength and endurance as well as improving freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke.

How To Register Online

If you are an active Y member or are currently registered for a program please follow the instructions below. Otherwise, please contact Member Services in person or by phone at (818) 845-8551 for more information.

You can download our Registration Dates or drop by the Member Services office.

  1. Click on the Register Online button at the top left of the Swimming Lessons page.
  2. Log-in with your username and password. If you've never registered for a Y program before, create a new account for you or your child.
  3. Click on the name of the person you wish to register.
  4. Under Select Categories, choose either All Group Swim Lesson Programs or Private Swim Lessons. Hit Search.
  5. Choose the swim lessons you wish to register for and provide payment online.

After completing the online registration process, download the New Parent Orientation Packet
