What do you do after you turn 90 years old?
At the Y, we prepare for another 90. Yes, we turned 90 years old and spent the entire year celebrating in various ways. We began the year by inviting past Y member and 1964 Olympic Gold medalist, Cathy Ferguson, to help us reopen our newly remodeled pool and ended the year with a wonderfully successful party at Nickelodeon, with over 300 special friends of the Y.
Looking back, our Board of Directors implemented strategies of a Strategic Plan committing our Y to concentrate on areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. In the process the Board developed this Impact Statement to provide a bold path to an even stronger Burbank:
Because of a strong Burbank Y, there is a sense of trust and connection. Individuals and families feel engaged by coming together to create an inclusive and healthy community. Youth are more confident, adults experience an improved quality of life, and older adults are socially connected.
This statement helps remind us that all of the youth programs and healthy living activities we conduct…we do so with purpose and intent to build a stronger community. expand
The Y experienced growth in membership and day camps. Our afterschool program experienced growth as a result of capacity building renovations made possible by our successful Capital Campaign…and our accredited preschool remained at capacity. Our Annual Support Campaign celebrated success by exceeding our goal. The campaign was led by Board members, Ken Nielsen, Mary Alvord and David Escobar. You will see in our annual report that we provided over $300,000 in scholarships, to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate regardless of their ability to pay.
A dedication to grow and support volunteerism also emerged from the planning process as we allocated resources in staff and committee work to expand that important fabric of our democratic society.
Looking ahead to this year our intent is to increase the Y’s presence through valued partnerships in some key areas of youth development and supporting healthy choices. We will continue to grow membership as a cornerstone to building a healthy and involved community and we are seeking to double our Annual Support Campaign effort to keep pace with the ever-growing need from those who struggle financially.
We will communicate the Y’s cause-driven message through a “voice” that is nurturing, genuine, determined, hopeful and welcoming.
This is a special community and we will count on the generosity of our members and partners to keep our doors open to whoever needs a place to go to help them be more healthy, confident, connected and secure.
May you be well, and thank you for being part of this great institution we fondly call The Y.

A member since 2012, David French (pictured with Jacqueline Licciardi) embodies the concept of membership by actively engaging in the Burbank YMCA community. He encourages other members’ health and wellness pursuits by meeting and supporting them, and providing a welcoming atmosphere. David helps remind members that the Y is unique in its character-driven atmosphere, right down to the idea that it’s everyone’s responsibility to “take care of things and clean up after yourself” so others can enjoy too. He strives to ensure that the Y remains welcoming and family friendly. David not only offers ideas on service improvements, but gives his time and resources to be part of the solution.

Dave and Karrie Stewart have been members of the Burbank YMCA since 2013. In addition to establishing Burbank’s South Hills Church in our community one year ago, the Stewart family, including kids Grey, Dylan, Molly and Tyler, have given much time and talent volunteering at YMCA events like Family Fun Night, Turkey Trot and 90th Anniversary Gala. They are actively involved in many of our adult and youth fitness programs- Dave even coaches a youth basketball team. Through their interactions at the Y, the Stewarts have built friendships with many other families that extend beyond their Y involvement. The Stewarts are always asking how they can help and demonstrate YMCA character values in every way.

Moah Pollas has been an active participant in the Burbank YMCA’s Youth & Government program for the past three years. His leadership in this model legislature program earned him the position of Chaplain and he can be seen leading his fellow delegates in cheers at their conferences. When Moah ran for Youth Governor at the statewide conference in Sacramento, his campaign was followed by a camera crew to capture footage of the process as a tool to recruit new students into the program. Moah spoke in front of 3,000 students, staff and advisors, earning him the respect of his peers and The Rising Star Award in his Lobbyist program. In addition to his work in Youth and Government, and in between school work, Moah manages to find time to volunteer at community events like the Burbank YMCA Service Club’s annual Christmas Tree Lot and Pancake Breakfast fundraisers, Disney’s Light Up the Season, and the YMCA’s “We Love Our Y” event. Moah’s talent and hard work inspires those around him and he exemplifies the YMCA’s character values.

Nickelodeon Animation Studios has demonstrated an incredible commitment to the Burbank community and has supported the Burbank YMCA by graciously hosting two major events in 2014: the Game+Hack STEM Challenge and the 90th anniversary “Cheers to 90 Years” gala. The generous donation of the ideal venue made both events great successes in broadening awareness of the Burbank Community YMCA’s mission and in raising funds to support our programs. In addition, the Nickelodeon staff personally demonstrated their community spirit by offering their time and support for planning and execution, making both events a true community partnership.
After getting off to a great start in our first year of working with Nickelodeon, the Y looks forward to developing creative new ways to reach children and families in our community for years to come.

The Burbank Y’s partnerships with other local organizations and businesses in the community are key to its ongoing mission to connect and inspire diverse people of all ages and backgrounds. The Y is proud to honor Woodbury University, an organization that has served a distinguished role in meeting the educational needs of Southern California and has been a consistent supporter of the Burbank Community YMCA. Top Woodbury administrators and faculty have given generously of their expertise to help lead the Y, serving on key committees as well as on the Board of Directors.
Woodbury University empowers their students to do extraordinary things and allows the Burbank YMCA to do the same. For example, aspiring architects in grades 4th to 8th can participate in Art of Architecture, a unique YMCA summer camp experience, featuring instruction from Woodbury architects and designers held on the college campus. Woodbury has long supported Y events including the Capital Campaign, Game+Hack, 90th Anniversary and annual Turkey Trot. Together we will continue to strengthen and support the Burbank community.

Samantha Koll (left) has a long history with the Burbank YMCA and the Y Service Club as a dedicated participant and volunteer. Samantha’s Y experience started as a child in YMCA Summer Day Camp. She loved camp so much that when she became too old to be a camper, she became a Counselor-In-Training and eventually, a Senior Camp Counselor. In high school, Samantha played competitive softball but managed to also stay active in the Y Youth & Government program. expand
After earning her BA and teaching credential at Cal State Northridge, Samantha became a substitute teacher for Burbank Unified School District and also worked part time at the Y. Last summer she was the lead counselor in the Y’s successful “Learn, Grow, Thrive” summer program.
Not only is Samantha the current secretary of the Y Service Club, she helps out at Y Service club events all year long including the annual Pancake Breakfast, Disney’s pumpkin patch, Disney’s Light Up the Season and the Christmas Tree Lot. If the Y Service Club is supporting an event, you can be sure to find Samantha smiling and giving of her time.
Doris Umemoto (right) has been integral to the success of the Burbank Community YMCA for more than 20 years. Doris wears two hats - as a Y employee and as a long-time volunteer for the Burbank YMCA Service Club. For the past 18 years Doris has served as the Burbank YMCA’s Executive Assistant, a role that touches on all aspects of running the Y, including internal and external communications; interacting with local government, businesses and other service organizations; developing marketing materials; ensuring brand compliance; assisting with day-to-day operations; and so much more. You can trust Doris to ensure that things are running smoothly. expand
Doris began her Y journey at Camp Earl-Anna, a priority project of the Burbank Y’s Men’s Club at the time, where, as camp secretary, she oversaw projects like the camp’s marketing, registration and fundraising efforts. In spring and during the holidays, Doris can be found after hours volunteering at two of the Y Service Club’s biggest fundraisers, the annual Pancake Breakfast and the Christmas Tree Lot. She is known for recognizing when there is a need and simply taking care of it. Given her long personal history with the Y and her wealth of knowledge about the organization’s history, Doris is often called upon to serve as the Burbank Y’s unofficial historian. And believe it or not, Doris can even be found at the Y in her spare time - on the basketball court shooting hoops with her family.

It’s no surprise that Ann Howard (left) has been an extremely popular group exercise instructor since she started at the Y in 2009. She demonstrates the Y value of caring by always taking the time to talk with members, and learn their names so she can better support them in meeting their health and fitness goals. Ann is equally generous with the Y staff, giving of her time to support and mentor new instructors. She believes that fun is as important as hard work and celebrates holidays by decorating her workout rooms and leading her classes in festive, smile-inducing costumes. Instructors like Ann Howard make the Y so much more than a gym.
JodiLyn Reneaud (right) was the perfect choice to become the Burbank YMCA’s first-ever Chief Ambassador and Director of Volunteer Engagement, a role she undertook in 2014. Jodi is kind, gracious, hardworking and an integral part of the Burbank YMCA mission, sometimes even referred to as “the heart of the Y” by her colleagues. Jodi, a former dancer, started at the Burbank Y 18 years ago as the Gymnastics Director. She rose through the ranks to become the Senior Program Director and then Membership Director, taking on each new assignment with a positive attitude, open mind and determination. In her current role as the Director of Volunteer Engagement, Jodi built a new department from the ground up in record time. She now manages over 400 unique volunteers a year who contributed a staggering 4,800 hours in 2014 to the Y and the greater Burbank community. Her work in this position has directly lead to the success of Y programs like the Annual Campaign, Turkey Trot and Stay ‘N’ Play Room, to name just a few, proving that Jodi is an indispensable asset to the YMCA.

The Burbank Community YMCA is indebted to our amazing Board of Directors who bring a wide spectrum of talent and expertise to the operation of our Y. They generously give their time and share their passion for our cause.
We’re especially grateful that all of our 2014-15 Directors will continue to serve for 2015-16, along with two new Board Members whom we are excited to welcome.
